Multimodal Presentation

Synopsis:
My multimodal presentation is on Sally Mann, an American photographer known for her black-and-white photos of her family and depiction of the American South's countryside. Sally Mann has created a variety of series over the years, but I chose to focus on one of her photography books. In 1983, she began shooting 12-year-old girls in her native state of Virginia who were the daughters of her friends and relatives. These images eventually comprised her first series, which she published in the book At Twelve (1988). I chose this series because it features photos of young girls, and the book "captures the complex feelings and growing identities of adolescent females," according to The Museum of Contemporary Photography, which praised an image named "Candy Cigarette." At Twelve's concept drew me in and made me think. Sally Mann creates compelling pictures of childhood, sexuality, and mortality that have often been viewed as provocative. She primarily works with landscapes and explores topics such as memory, desire, mortality, family, and nature.
